The 2.5 cm long teat plug prevents sticking and keeps the teat canal open. The teat plug soothes the teat and this in turn stimulates and accelerates the healing process.

The teat plug will totally dissolve in 10 days or it can be milked out of the teat. Bruising of the teat or wounds on the inside of the teat canal can be treated more rapidly. Damaged teats can be milked more effectively after a short resting period during which a teat plug is used. Mastitis can also be prevented.

Hygiene is very important when treating a damaged teat, therefore each new teat plug is supplied in a sealed pack. The teat plug should only be touched at the base, so the part which enters the teat remains clean. The plug may protrude 2 to 3 cm out of the teat which prevents ingress of dirt. The teat plug remains in the teat for several days depending on the severity of the wound. Nonetheless the teat should be kept clean. After 1 to 2 weeks the swelling reduces and the wound is healed. The teat can then be milked again, with no withdrawal period.
